People’s Teahouse Workers of the World (Re)Unite!

During the 1970s and 1980s, the People’s Teahouse served dim sum, tea, ramen, and almond cookies to hungry Stanford students, next to Madera House (today called the Okada House). The volunteer work force consisted mainly of Asian Theme House residents (then located in Junipero, and later moved to Okada), along with members of JRA (Junipero Ringers Association), AASA (Asian American Students Association), and anyone else willing to contribute to maintaining this unique venue. All proceeds were donated to Asian community groups by vote of the Teahouse Workers.

Specialties from the People’s Teahouse menu will be available for tasting at this Reunion Homecoming event. This Reunion Year, many of the first wave of Workers and Managers will be present, to share their experiences and stories. Final details and registration information will be posted soon, so please keep up with your SAPAAC newsletters and emails.

2/2/2019 | Stanford Center for Asian Health Research and Education (CARE)

An audience of about 80 filled a lecture room on a stormy Saturday night to hear faculty member Dr. Bryant Lin introduce a new Stanford Medical School program focusing on Asian health issues. Dr. Lin described how Asians have different levels of health risk than whites—for example, Asians are nearly three times more likely to develop liver cancer than non-Hispanic whites and twice as likely to develop stomach cancer.

2/17/2019: SAPAAC in Seattle | Lunar New Year Dim Sum Luncheon

This year’s Lunar New Year Dim Sum Luncheon was postponed for a week due to snow! We still had a very nice turnout of 34 people on February 17th, 2019. This is the 4th year the event has been held at Dim Sum Factory in Factoria Mall of Bellevue. The luncheon was organized as a buffet style, allowing alumni, family, and guests to more easily migrate from table to table to mingle with each other. The food was delicious, and everyone had a wonderful time!

No-No Boy is a multimedia concert performed by Brown University graduate students Julian Saporiti and Erin Aoyama. Taking inspiration from interviews with World War II Japanese Incarceration camp survivors, his own family’s history living through the Vietnam War, and many other stories of Asian American experience, Julian Saporiti has transformed his doctoral research at Brown University into folk songs in an effort to bring these stories to a broader audience. Also featuring Erin Aoyama, a fellow PhD student at Brown whose family was incarcerated at one of the 10 Japanese American concentration camps, No-No Boy aims to shine a light on experiences that have remained largely hidden in the American consciousness.

7/22/2018: Membership Summer Barbecue

SAPAAC is hosting its first summertime membership family picnic—and you're invited!

Elections are also around the corner, so mingle with current and departing SAPAAC Board members and possible candidates in the Bay Area. SAPAAC members are welcome to bring guests. Alum-not-yet-members are welcome to come solo to find out more about SAPAAC.

But don't come empty-handed! Bring something to share with 10-12 others. We'll provide Korean BBQ, chicken sausages, and a veg option. Choose something from your personal repertoire or our list of suggestions: drinks, sides, watermelon, non-melting desserts, etc.
