11/30/2017: A Lecture by Marci Kwon | The Evasive Bodies of May’s Photo Studio: Images from Chinatown
4:15-6:00pm, Thurs., Nov. 30, 2017
Fisher Conference Center
Francis C. Arrillaga Alumni Center
326 Galvez Street, Stanford, CA, 94305
This lecture will explore the remarkable body of photographs produced by May’s Photo Studio, the first Chinese-run photography studio in San Francisco’s Chinatown. From its opening in 1923 until the mid-1960s, wife-and-husband Isabella May Lee and Leo Chan Lee documented weddings, special events, Cantonese opera productions, and even produced erotic photographs for Chinese immigrants during the height of the Chinese Exclusion Act. The resulting archive, currently housed in Stanford Special Collections, offers an unprecedented snapshot of daily life in San Francisco Chinatown from the perspective of its inhabitants, akin to James Van Der Zee’s famed photographs of Harlem.
Following the lecture, there will be a reception and viewing of a pop-up exhibition featuring a selection of images from the May's Photo Studio on loan from Stanford’s Special Collections archive [image featured above courtesy of Stanford Special Collections].
Marci Kwon specializes in the art and culture of the United States. Her research and teaching interests include the intersection of fine art and vernacular practice, theories of modernism, cultural exchange between Asia and the Americas, "folk" and "self-taught" art, and issues of race and objecthood. Kwon teaches courses on Asian-American Art, 1850-Present and Migration and Diaspora in American Art.

We are excited to bring our Stanford Asian Pacific Islander Alumni in New York together for a visit to the Asia Society's latest exhibit "After Darkness: Southeast Asian Art in the Wake of History."
At a time of social and political tension, how should art and artists respond to the challenges of the moment? Does art have the power to change the world or does the world shape the evolution of art? After Darkness: Southeast Asian Art in the Wake of History considers these questions through the work of seven contemporary artists and one artist group from Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam, whose lives and artistic practices have intersected with defining periods of socio-political transition in their respective societies.
Featured artists of the exhibit include FX Harsono, Htein Lin, Dinh Q. Lê, Nge Lay, Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, The Propeller Group, Angki Purbandono, and Tintin Wulia. A description of the exhibit can be found here and a promotional video can be found here.
On Friday, October 20, actors bring to life the personal accounts of artists Dinh Q. Lê and Tintin Wulia, who are featured in the exhibition. Followed by a Q & A with the artists and a reception.

As one recent visitor said: "Just to confirm my enthusiasm as expressed to Susan, my wife Diane and I have both been to the actual site in Xi’an, which is huge and which conveys a sense of the enormous scale of that site. The touring exhibit that is now in Seattle and that will only go to one other location in the U.S., Philadelphia, cannot match the size and scale of the original, but, instead, it gives you far more up-close and intimate time with individual statues and other artifacts that have been recovered. You can stand just a couple of feet away from an individual archer, chariot driver, musician, official or general, which one usually can’t do in Xi’an. Moreover, this exhibit shows the high degree of scientific knowledge that has been gained about how the individual statues were made and were painted by the thousands Using the latest digital technology, one room includes a time-lapse simulation of a full color statue through its entire life cycle that is quite stunning. If the actual site in Xi’an might be considered the “macro” view, this is a decidedly “micro” view."

4/15/2017: Asian Art Museum Tomb Treasures Exhibit (San Francisco)
Join us for a Stanford alumni visit to the San Francisco Asian Art Museum for the Tomb Treasures Exhibit. The Asian Art Museum will be the only venue for this exclusive exhibition featuring new discoveries from China's Han Dynasty.
One of the most powerful civilizations of the ancient world, China’s Han dynasty achieved profound cultural and artistic influence, technological advancements and military might. Two thousand years later, discoveries of royal tombs allow us to glimpse these extraordinary accomplishments firsthand.
Emulating their grand palaces, Han royals built lavishly furnished tombs so that, in the afterlife, no need would go unmet. Daily utensils, kitchen vessels, royal symbols, weaponry and even toiletries were all accounted for. And the nobility spared no expense preserving the tools of earthly pleasures — food, music, wine, sex — in anticipation of an afterlife to surpass this world.
On view for the first time in the U.S., 160 rare selections from recent excavations — including a jade coffin, rare bronze bells, elaborate crafts and much more — share the extravagance, artistry and elegance of Han royal clans.

Join us for an exclusive Stanford outing to historic Angel Island. Our guided tour will include a visit to the historic hospital building currently undergoing renovation and not open to the public until 2018.
We’ll be joined by Katherine Toy ’91, MA ’95, the current president of the Board of Directors of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, and past presidents Buck Gee ’72, Kathy Ko Chin ’80 and Howard Ting, MBA ’98 for a thought-provoking discussion on the lessons and legacy of Angel Island in today’s contemporary immigration climate.
We will take a tour of the site and have our discussion over lunch. (Remember to pack a lunch!) We aim to finish in time for participants to take the 1:55 p.m. ferry back to S.F. or the 2:20 p.m. back to Tiburon. For those who wish to enjoy more time on the island, both ferry companies offer later returns. Please consult the ferry schedules.
