We are collecting stories and documents related to Asian Americans at Stanford, which will eventually become part of an online repository.
For example, did you know that a Chinese freshman was thrown out of the Encina Hall dormitory in 1918, when he tried to move into his room? Chinese merchants in the community fundraised to build a clubhouse, to house students who were unwelcome in campus dorms.
There are also many revealing anecdotes by Jane and Leland Stanford Sr. in a 2011 thesis by Julie Cain on “The Chinese and the Stanfords: Immigration Rhetoric in Nineteenth-century California”
